CRIMINAL LAW

Federal criminal law deals with offenses that violate United States statutes, rather than state laws, and these cases are prosecuted by U.S. Attorneys in federal courts.

The federal system often involves more serious charges—such as drug trafficking, white-collar crimes like wire fraud or embezzlement, weapons offenses, and crimes that cross state lines or involve federal agencies. These cases are typically investigated by federal agencies like the FBI, DEA, or IRS and are backed by significant resources behind the prosecution.

One thing that makes federal criminal law particularly complex is the procedural rigor and sentencing guidelines that come with it. Federal courts follow the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, which heavily influence outcomes and often involve mandatory minimum sentences, especially in drug and firearm cases. This means early legal intervention is critical. As an attorney, I work not only to protect my clients’ rights but also to analyze potential weaknesses in the government’s case, negotiate effectively with federal prosecutors, and, when needed, fight vigorously in court. The stakes are incredibly high, and navigating the federal system requires precision, strategy, and experience.

In many federal cases, pre-indictment representation can be a game-changer. When clients come to me early, it opens the door for negotiations or proactive defense strategies that can impact whether charges are brought at all, or what those charges will be. In a system known for its toughness, having skilled, strategic counsel from the outset is essential.
